How to have a garden living in an apartment
You don’t have to own 200 acres of land or even have a garden to get involved with sustainable practices and learning to grow your own food.
We live in a two bedroom apartment and I only have partial shade and the joys of Michigan weather to fight with
I had to find out how to deal with my gardening challanges.
I planted a little later this year because there was an event at one of the local community places my husband and I have gone too. Infact the same place I took the financial budgeting class. I went with friend of mine and we both got to learn how to garden in containers and scored free supplies to get us started.
One of the things I have noticed when doing our budget is a lot of our income goes towards food. Like 800 a month on grocery’s not to mention the times we go out to eat on date nights, family outings and of course our weekly pizza ordering. I have to bring our food budget way down without being on any kind of assistance our income is too high for that. Yes with just hubby working we have rent, bills and food.
feels like it it goes to waste so often that I had to figure something out.
I do meal prep but not as often as I could and that alone will cut our food cost down.
planting a container garden was the next idea we had already. A friend and I went to this event and it was great. They provided the supplies and we got to learn how to plant and take what we planted back home. Then there is the car, gas insurance both life and health ect. You get the drift bills pile high. As an adult with 22q people wonder how I manage fiances and handle those kinds of pressures it comes with being mindful frugal and logical.
Money used to equal emotions for me joy fear excitment and hate. I had to manage my mindset before we made any changes. That ment 30 dollars a month on Starbucks coffee had too stop to once a month Starbucks and you know that money not spend on high calorie coffee drinks scored me a monthy membership. I use the keurig to make coffee daily at home and already save a ton of money
I am the kind of person who does not have a green thumb I suppose I can’t even keep the blue berry plant alive that Bella bought home one year from school last year. Bella asked if we could have plans on the deck this summer so that why I had interest in going to this class.
I do plant herbs on my deck, parsley, celentro, basil. and green onions.
This time I learned how to plant green peppers, Red peppers, tomatoes and a day lilly.
Next I am going to try potatoes, strawberries and blueberries
the library one weekend had one of those home depo events so we also made a bird house and a plant container the plant that was planted for that was called impaitence. I am still waiting for it to bloom it’s pretty pink flower
